SSR Athlete of the Week – Nate Navarette

Small school or big school, averaging 35 points per game throughout a week is worthy of praise.

North Hills Christian boys’ basketball sharp-shooter Nate Navarette backed up his 37 point effort in a victory over Auburn Christian on Tuesday with 33 more points in a win over Excelsior on Friday.

Navarette is this week’s SolanoSportsRadio.com Athlete of the Week.

Top 7 After a Week Off

The Top 7 took the week off, last week and no it wasn’t  because the Top 7 doesn’t improve of the new SJS power ratings.   The first San Joaquin Section power ratings came out last week and with out going into a ton of detail, I think the new changes are not for the good of the student-athletes.  I  sang the praises of the section changing the football playoffs, so I am not afraid of change, but these new ratings put WAY to much meaning on conference record and not overall record or conference stregnth.  I said I wouldn’t go on so I better switch it up and focus on this week’s games.

With just a couple of weeks left in league play, things are really heating up for playoff spots all across the county.  One of the biggest games this week and maybe any week in girls basketball is Tuesday Night with 1) Napa at Vacaville. The Indians won the first meeting but the Bulldogs are at home this time and will be looking for a crucial win for they playoff resume.  Both of these teams post players’ get all the attention but the matchup that will be the factor is 2) Shay Mendes of Vacaville against Noelle Roldan of the Indians. These two ladies are guards and will see a lot of each other Tuesday night.  Staying with the ladies side of things on Tuesday night a tough matchup of individual talents take place at Rodriguez High School.  The Mustangs are led by 3) Khristina Hunter and she will have her hands full with Rechel Carter of the Apaches. Both of these young ladies lead their teams scoring as Carter scores 14 a game and Hunter drops in 19 a game.  All of these weeks matchups are rematches except for one big matchup outside the SJS.  Wednesday night 4) St. Joseph of Notre Dame of Alameda boy’s squad hosts St. Patricks/St. Vincent’s in their only matchup of the year as the Bay Shore Athletic League plays an unbalanced schedule for their 8 team league.  This is a large game for both teams to improve their seedings in the North Coast Section playoffs.  St. Joseph’s comes into the game 19-5 and SP/SV will either be 21-3 or 20-4 depending on the outcome of the monster matchup Monday evening against Salesian.   Back to the rematch theme, 5) Rodriguez boys travel to Vallejo to take on the Apaches Tuesday night. The Mustangs throttled the Apaches back in January and have won 11 in a row of Vallejo, but the Apaches haven’t lost since and will be fired up at home for this one.  Continuing with the boys side of things the 6) Armijo Indians make the short road trip down I80 to take on the Wood Wildcats. This game is Tuesday night and the Wildcats will be looking to avenge their one point loss at Armijo earlier this season.  Wood is probably out of the playoff hunt sitting at 23rd but they can hurt the Indian chances as Armijo sits at 11th after the second week of power ratings.  One team in our county jumped up 10 spots in the power ratings in just one week and they have a HUGE matchup this Tuesday.  7) Vanden boys travel to Bethel to take on the upstart Jaguars, Bethel will be looking forward to their big matchup on Thursday vs. Rodriguez so the Vikings will be looking to pull of the upset.  Ben Scott will need a big game for the Vikings to pull of this upset, not only will he have to score but slow down fellow super sophomore Rodney Cook of the Jags.

The Top 7 went a disappointed 2-4 two weeks, disappointing as only 6 games were picked due to human error and the only 2 victories again due to human error.  This tough week has the Top 7 at a dismal 11-9.

BOYS home team in italics

Rodriguez 75  Vallejo 61  Look for the Mustangs to continue their dominance over the Apaches.

SP/SV  64  St. Joseph’s of Notre Dame (Alameda) 56  Robbie Herndon carries his Bruins in this one, also look for a big game from Blake Reed.

Bethel 84  Vanden 72  Just to much speed and offense for the Jaguars for the Vikings to pull the upset and stay in the race, on the other side this win would really help the Jags playoff chances.

Rodriguez  72  Bethel  62  The Mustangs get their revenge on the Jaguars and pretty much seal up another SCAC crown.

GIRLS

Napa  57  Vacaville 49   The Bulldogs just don’t have enough offensive firepower to stay with the Indians.

Vallejo  62  Rodriguez 47  Hunter will have 20 plus but the Apaches are more then an one lady team and will get the win.

Armijo 57  Wood  42  The Indians get the MUCH needed win in league to keep their playoff hopes alive.

SSR Athlete of the Week – Tara Cooley

Dixon High girls’ basketball star Tara Cooley played a couple of impressive games last week and her second one helped her team bounce back from a heart-breaking defeat.

Two nights after scoring 29 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in a triple-overtime defeat to River City, the senior posted 20 points and five boards lifting the Rams to a critical Capital Valley Conference victory Thursday.

For the two quality efforts, Cooley is this week’s SolanoSportsRadio.com Athlete of the Week.

SSR Athlete of the Week – Erimma Amarikwa

Vanden High girls’ basketball star Erimma Amarikwa scored a combined 61 points over two Solano County Athletic Conference games this past week. That’s impressive.

She pulled down a combined 20 rebounds over those same two games. That’s impressive.

However, the 40 points she poured in during one 32 minute game against Rodriguez on Thursday was beyond impressive. For a girls’ basketball player from Solano County, that sort of performance is outer-worldly.

Obviously, Amarikwa is an easy choice for this week’s SolanoSportsRadio.com Athlete of the Week.

Top 7 Last week of January

The conference schedules in basketball are going to be at or near the halfway point after this week so we should learn a lot this week about teams in Solano County. We have learned some things to this point and after this week the picture will become a little clearer. The stregnth ratings for each league in Sac-Joaquin Section (SJS) are out, you can check them out at www.cifsjs.org , or listen to SSR Weekly from Sunday, January 24 for full explanation. The first playoff power ratings for the SJS will be released after this week’s games also. Before we get to the Top 7, the Top 7 wants to give props to Bethel boys for breaking its LONG SCAC losing streak (in the 30’s) and to coach Allison Johnson of Vanden girls. Coach Johnson’s Vikings scored three points in the fourth quarter of the game Thursday night against Hogan. Why is this worthy of props? The Vikings won that game 90-28 and Coach Johnson made sure the lady Vikings respect the game and their opponent, something that needs to be done more in high school athletics. Many schools all over this great nation of ours would go for 100, just to say they did it, but the Vikings showed great sportsmanship, led by Coach Johnson.

Let’s get right into it with a huge game in SCAC girls play. 1) Vanden travels to Vallejo to take on the Apaches Tuesday night. This game is a rematch despite being their first meeting in SCAC play, Vallejo defeated Vanden 58-55 back on December 29th in the West Coast Jamboree. That game was a small upset so expect Vanden to be fired up for this one, for the Apaches they obviously know they can play with the mighty Vikings. Both teams have four losses with Vallejo securing 16 wins and Vanden with 14, however the Vikings have played an amazing schedule. That first win for the Apaches is big for their confidence, but they also made sure the Vikings don’t just try to breeze through this one. Staying in the town of Vallejo night we go to an individual matchup that should be an exciting one to watch. (2) Rodney Cook and his Bethel Jaguars host Akintoye Akindele of Hogan high school, these two guards have been scoring at a very high clip and have both their teams to a surprising 2-1 start in league play. Neither one of these schools would have thought they would be 3-1 after four games and both have a chance in large part due to this two outstanding athletic guards. The SCAC has some interesting matchups both nights this week, but the Top 7 likes one that SSR has been talking about for awhile. (3) Vanden travels to Rodriguez on Thursday night, earlier this season we here at SSR thought Vanden had a chance to be the team to unseat the Mustangs on the top of the SCAC. The Vikings however, our of to a 1-2 start and the one win was an OT thriller over 0-3 Benicia. Rodriguez showed their vulnerability this week losing to Bethel and Vanden needs to try and copy some of the Jags mojo as the Vikings will need this one badly. The key in this one is much different then in year’s past where Vanden was so guard heavy, this year they have an interior presence. (4) Chris Broadnax and Tahron Morrison of the Vikings will have their hands full with Andre Lewis, Tyler Indowu and BJ Smith of Rodriguez. The Viking duo has given them a inside game Vanden has sorely been lacking for years, but the trio of Mustang bigs will be their toughest task yet this season. This rivalry has been dominated by the Mustangs as of late and the rebounding margins have been incredibly high in the Mustangs favor time and time again, can Vanden change the rebounding and final score? Moving over to the MEL girls side of things, Tuesday night (5) Vacaville travels to Fairfield. The Bulldogs will be the clear favorite but Fairfield has quietly gone 2-1 in league so far. The Falcons are looking to be a part of the talk for second place in the MEL as Napa looks to be the top team. Shante’ Sands of Fairfield is averaging just under 14 points and 12 rebounds a game listed as a 5′6″ point guard on their roster. Sands will need a big one to pull the upset but it should be a closer game then people would expect. The key will be sophomore  Taylor Caspers of Fairfield, she has only played 8 games because of a shoulder injury, but will face the twin towers of Vacaville Brianna French and Kendal Scott. Friday night in the MEL is rivalry night as all the schools play their inner-city rival. On the boy’s side (6) Wood travels across town to take on Vacaville. This hasn’t been much of a rivalry in basketball recently as Wood has won 10 straight. This year could be the year for the Bulldogs to break that long streak (seems to be happening around here lately) so that is why this game comes to mind as a something to check out Friday night over at Vacaville high school. The Top 7 always likes to look at some small school games and this week is no different as bay area power (7) Head-Royce of Oakland play Vacaville Christian in girls non-league action Friday night. Head-Royce is 14-3 and lost in the NCS section final last season to eventual state runner up Branson in Division five. Vacaville Christian is division four but this is a good game for the lady Falcons to judge themselves. Both these teams will use this game as a playoff test for thier respective teams, for small school girls basketball it doesn’t get any better then this one.

The Top 7 went 4-3 last week with a 3-0 girls and 1-3 boys mark, overall the Top 7 is 9-5. Again home team are in italics.

GIRLS

Vacaville Christian 65 Head-Royce (Oakland) 62 This should be a classic game I go with the Falcons at home where they are 8-0.

Vanden 69 Vallejo 61 The Apaches with the early win over the Vikings probably have awaken a giant and the Vikings will get their revenge.

Armijo 53 Fairfield 49 Fairfield has a big one on Tuesday against Vacaville but this is one is just as important. Marshanique Hall of the Indians will slow down Shante’ Sands enough for the victory.

BOYS

Rodriguez 75 Vanden 64 Both these teams have a loss to Bethel they would like to forget but Rodriguez still just too deep for the Vikings. Both these teams have struggled on defense at times this game could be very high scoring.

Hogan 64 Vallejo 62 I picked Vallejo last week over RHS and I was wrong so this week I will pick against them, if Hogan wins this the SCAC will really be a jumbled mess in the standings.

Vacaville 53 Wood 47 The Bulldogs will break the 10-game losing streak and stay in the hunt for 2nd in the MEL.

SSR Athlete of the Week – Rodney Cook

This past week was one of the greatest in the history of the Bethel High boys’ basketball program.

Rodney Cook had a lot to do with why.

On Tuesday, Cook poured in 33 points in helping the Jaguars break a long Solano County Athletic Conference losing streak with a victory over Vanden.

As it turned out, Cook and the Jags were just getting started.

Two days later, the sophomore guard scored 24 points, as the Jaguars upset three-time defending SCAC champion Rodriguez 68-66 in overtime.

Cook is a well-deserving recipient of this week’s SolanoSportsRadio.com Athlete of the Week honor.
